Test of English as a Foreign Language

What is TOEFL?

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a globally recognized English proficiency test designed for students aspiring to study in English-speaking countries. It is conducted by ETS (Educational Testing Service) to assess a candidate’s ability in the four core academic English skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.

The exam is primarily delivered as the TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test), which is taken on a computer. In addition, ETS now offers the TOEFL Paper Edition, as well as the TOEFL Home Edition, allowing students to take the test from the comfort and safety of their homes.

TOEFL scores are widely accepted by universities and academic institutions, especially in the United States and Canada.

Types of TOEFL Exams?

The TOEFL test is available in three formats:

  1. TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test)
This is the most popular format, accounting for over 98% of TOEFL tests taken worldwide. It is conducted online at designated test centers.

  2. TOEFL Paper Edition
Reintroduced with enhanced safety measures, this format is designed for students who prefer taking the test on paper, especially in areas with limited internet access.

  3. TOEFL Home Edition
This version of the TOEFL iBT allows students to take the exam from the comfort of their home. It is monitored online by a live proctor to ensure test integrity throughout the session.

What is TOEFL iBT?

The TOEFL Internet-Based Test (iBT) is the most commonly taken version of the TOEFL exam, conducted online at authorized test centers. It is widely preferred by students due to its convenience and accessibility. In India, TOEFL iBT test centers are available in all major cities.

What is the TOEFL Test on Paper?

The TOEFL iBT Paper Edition is a hybrid format introduced in select countries, including India. The test is conducted in two sessions:

  • Reading, Listening, and Writing sections are taken on paper at a test center.

  • The Speaking section is completed at home on a computer and monitored by a human proctor online.

Candidates must ensure a suitable testing environment at home for the Speaking section.

What is the TOEFL Paper-Based Test (PBT)?

The traditional TOEFL Paper-Based Test (PBT) was officially discontinued in 2021. However, scores from this test remain valid for up to two years from the test date.

What is TOEFL Home Edition?

The TOEFL Home Edition is the same as the TOEFL iBT but taken from the comfort of the test taker’s home. Introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, this option follows strict ETS standards and is supervised live by an online proctor.

TOEFL Eligibility

There are no strict eligibility criteria set by ETS for the TOEFL. However, candidates must have completed their 10+2 education from a recognized board to be eligible to take the TOEFL iBT. This makes it suitable for students aiming for undergraduate or postgraduate studies abroad.
